Ivan Karev

Ivan Karev graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts, Sofia with, an MA in Scenography.

Since 1987 he is working as a stage designer in theatres in Bulgaria. He is been working for more than 100 performances, including: Antigone by Jean Anouilh, La Cantatrice Chauve by Eugène Ionesco, Mandate by Erdman, La Ronde by A. Schnitzler, Black Hole by G. Stefanovsky, NATFA, Cherry Orchard by Chekhov, Headstate by Irwin Welsh, Hamlet by Shakespeare, Crime and Punishment after Dostoyevsky, Red by John Logan; Cosi Fan Tutte, Mozart, dir. Eric Gibson, conductor: maestro Gregory Buchalter; Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi, Puccini, dir. Dale Morehouse, Varna International 2019, and many others.

Karev works in Sweden where he accomplished settings for Murlin Murlo by Nikolay Koljada; Family Stories by Biljana Srbljanovich, KalejdoskopTheatre Malmö, and in North Macedonia: Yonadab by Peter Shaffer, La Femme Comme Champ de Bataille by Matei Visniec, Genocide 21 by Lyubisha Geogrievsky, Dramski Theatar Skopje.

During the years he’s been participating in many exhibitions some of which are The International Quadrennial in Prague, the exhibitions and performances of Atelier 29, and Exhibitions of the Art Today Association for Contemporary Art, 1995-2022. He also participated in the IFS – Festival of Scenic Arts in Rome in 2010.

Since 1986 he’s been a member of the art group Atelie 29. He is also a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists. 

Ivan Karev was the commissioner of the Bulgarian National Exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial in 1995.
